Abstract

The present study was carried out among nurses to identify their knowledge and attitudes toward assessment and intervention of patients with pain. This study results expected to provide a basic data of educational program about pain management for nurses.

Samples were selected from 238 nurses working at three hospitals in Taegue during the period of August- October, 1994. The questionaires were developed for this study by authors. The results were as follows.
1. The total score was 60. 75%. It indicated that nurses had lack of knowledge and attitudes toward assessment and intervention of patients with pain.
2. On the assessment of patients with pain, nurses made correct answers such items as facial expression(97.9%), moaning(94.5%), anxiety and depression (92.9%). However there were low rates of correct answers about pain physiology and theory(28.6%), measuring pain as VAS(4. 6%), MPQ(5.9%), INTENSITY(8.4%) and attitudes toward patients with pain.
3. According to rates of correct answer about nursing intervention of pain patients, there was low level of analgesic medication as 33.2%. There were high rates of 89.9%, 94.1% about ¢¥needed family support and participation for pain management¢¥. there was somewhat low about the item : ¢¥it is possible to control pain by patient and their family teaching¢¥(72.7%). And most nurses knew that cognitive behavioral approach, divertion and relaxation were helpful to relief pain.
4. In further analysis. it was shown that mean scores of knowledge and attitudes toward pain management were influenced on whether nurses were educated about it or not.
As the above results, it showed that nurses had lack of knowledge base of assessement and intervention of pain patients and misconcepts of pain re-lief.
Therefore it is necessary for nurses to be given an appropriate education about pain management be-fore taking care of patient with pain.
